Weekly Reflections

September 13, 2007
This week I was not able to attend.  I had a family emergency.  However, I already had my book to read, and some of my own family history written.  The book that I had picked out to read was about a family that would travel to their grandparent's house for the summer.  It was called "Big Mama's" by Donald Crews.  I am looking forward to the next class to be able to start my own work with the students!

Today's class was very educational.  I had never learned in depth about the 6 traits of writing.  I was really glad that we went over it in so much depth.  I feel that I am still going to have to refer to my notes when we are working the students.  I am REALLY looking forward to next week's class when we startn working the with the students on a one on one basis.  I can't wait!

This was a very exciting class.  I was thrilled that we were assigned our students that we were going to work with.  I have a girl and a boy that I will be working with.  The girl tends to talk quite a bit.  The boy will talk to you if he is asked a question or is definite about what he wants to talk about.  When the girl is talking he is VERY polite and listens as the girl talks.  While the girl is talking I wonder if some of her stories are not mostly made up.  The only reason I think that this might be the case is because some of her stories do not seem very realistic.  However, we want to encourage these students and make sure that they are heard.  Sometimes students are not heard enough, and I feel we as future teachers need to keep this in mind.  I am looking forward to working with my students, and starting our writing process together!

This weeks class with my students was very enlightning.  Last week my students had some good stories, however had not put a lot of thought into them.  This week it was very different.  This week they were ready!  The girl wanted to definitely talk her brainstorming out.  The boy was more of a worker.  He would talk about his experiences if you asked him, but if you would leave him alone was also fine with that.  Both of my students had brainstormed about more than one story.  I am excited to see which of the stories they will decide to actually work on to complete.  As for myself I am continuing to write, and have not come to a solid conclusion about what story I am going to write about.  I am looking forward to be able to have a part of the writing process with these children.

Today's class was a great learning experience for me.  I was sad because one of my student's was not there.  I know that he enjoys writing, and is excited about this writing project.  The other student that I am working with started to write her first draft.  It is difficult for her to focus and write off of what she brainstormed from the week before.  She is easily distracted.  I think this is because she does not feel comfortable enough with writing.  Since she did not feel comfortable she was not able to finish very much of her writing.  I am hoping that this next week will be more successful.  I am going to try to use different tactics to try to keep her more engaged, and relaxed while she is writing.

This class was a learning experience for me.  I do not think our group was very successful in our planning.  I realize now that we should have modeled for the students about our stars and wishes.  The children were trying, and giving it their all, but were lost.  I can not believe that it ended up in that situation.  I know that we are not going to always have successes in our classrooms, but when I am only working with two students I feel that I should have more success.  Next week will be a big week for us, and trying to integrate the stars and wishes along with finishing their stories.  I am excited about what we have to come, and I am ready to face it head on with energy for myself and my students.

Today was VERY successful!  I was very impressed with my students, and their work.  They completed quite a bit.  I was shocked to find that they were more comfortable today than they have been.  Their stories are coming along quite nicely.  I am very excited about next week to see how much more progress we might have.  I am also looking forward to our guest speaker.  I know we are going to get a lot out of our guest speaker!

Today I had a great experience!  My students were wonderful!  They were very excited about getting their stories finished.  They were already talking about how they wanted to start drawing about their stories.  They have really gotten into their stories.  Their stories have really come around from the beginning.  I think what is that greatest part of it is that they have warmed up to me to feel comfortable with their stories.  I cannot wait to see how they are going to draw witht their stories!

Today I only had one of my students.  I was bummed, because I enjoy the company of both of my students.  However, the one student and I were able to work on the final details about her story.  We were also able to work on her biography.  It was great to find out information about her that I did not know.  As for my other student I will have to meet with him next week to get his biography information.  I am ecstatic that this project is coming to an end, and I am to see the results first hand!

Today was very exciting!!  When I got to get with my students I was able to see their drawings.  AHHH!!!  They were great!  I could not believe that their artwork was so good.  Then they saw my artwork.  We all could not help but laugh!  We all took turns practicing reading, and telling our stories.  They are very excited and cannot wait for them to be able to actually tell their stories to their piers, and other family members.  I am excited for them!  I cannot wait!!
